The Woman I Am

Friday, June 13th, 2014

IMelodyt is a great joy that Melody Maxwell, who did her PhD at IBTS and is much loved in our community, has now had her revised thesis published, under the title The Woman I Am. This is a splendid book which analyzes the traditional, progressive, and potential roles female Southern Baptist writers and editors portrayed for Southern Baptist women from 1906 to 2006, particularly in the area of missions. Melody is Assistant Professor of Christian Studies at Howard Payne University in Brownwood, Texas. She previously served with East Texas Baptist University and Woman’s Missionary Union.

Batty A. DeBerg, an influential writer on gender and American fundamentalism, commends Melody’s ‘deft reading, description, and analysis’ as a ‘huge contribution’ to the field of studies in the role of women in American religious history. DeBerg describes Melody’s scholarship as ‘impeccable’.

Melody’s work is a superb example of how to read and utilise very extensive primary source materials to produce work that is well-argued, illuminating, accessible and relevant.

Congratulations to Melody!

A Dislocated Book Club!..

Monday, February 3rd, 2014

This idea was born at the doctoral colloquium (which also included a student-led conference on Migration and Dislocation, hence the title) – and here’s Rosa’s first suggestion for the Book Club. We’ll figure out how we technically conduct the discussion, but for now, read the blog – and then the first suggested book!..

Hello and welcome to the IBTS dislocated book club. This grew out of a discussion following worship at the recent IBTS research colloquium in Amsterdam – some of us were excited about the possibility of having a forum where we could share our thoughts about good books to read and offer our feedback. This book club has very soft boundaries: everybody is welcome, and your comments don’t need to be particularly sophisticated or artistic. Honest will do.

Ivana suggested that we could extend it to movies too, so feel free to recommend a movie you’ve enjoyed.

Here is my contribution to start the ball rolling: the book Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman. On one level this is a fairy tale for adults, complete with all the necessary ingredients: giants, angels, magical powers, alternative universes, and three challenges to solve in order to rescue the key from the monk guardians … On another level this is a story about London, the Underground (metro) system, and dislocation: what happens to the people who fall through the cracks of the London we can see? On yet another level, it is about the hero having to choose between three visions of reality. Mainly, though, it’s a lot of fun, and if you enjoy Terry Pratchett or Narnia you’ll probably enjoy this.

I look forward to reading your suggestions now …

Tangnefedd,

– Rosa

Two books on Baptists around the world

Thursday, November 24th, 2011

Are global Baptist overviews like big red London buses ? You wait for ages, then two come along at the same time? David Bebbington has placed us all in his debt by producing his Baptists Through the Centuries: A History of a Global People, based on material delivered at Baylor University, which seeks to track the story of the world community of Baptists from the early 1600’s until today. Robert E Johnson, on the staff at Central Baptist Theological Seminary in Kansas has equally sought to provide an overview A Global Introduction to Baptist Churches within the same time frame and a similar intention to Bebbington.

The authoritative work by David Bebbington, after a long academic career, will take some matching in terms of accuracy, detail and scholarship, though his book is principally devoted to Baptists in the United Kingdom and United States, but each chapter regularly makes reference to developments within the wider Baptist family, especially in Australia, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa. Whilst the book has early historical chapters on our Reformation roots, the Anabaptists, Particular and General Baptists and Baptists and Revival in the Eighteenth Century, later chapters are more thematic exploring key issues such as the Social Gospel, Racism, Women in Baptist life, Ministry and Sacraments, Religious Liberty and Foreign Mission. Some of these, such as the chapter on women and the one on racism are often neglected amongst us! Johnson is not so commanding a figure on the Baptist stage and he takes an approach devoted to geographical comprehensiveness and following historical time frames with chapters on Baptists in each of the main regions of the world and in three time eras which he calls – Primal, Frontier, Proliferation. Leadership's Legacy

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

I’ve enjoyed flipping through a recent book of Ruth A Tucker on Leadership Reconsidered. Offering quick reviews of the most fashionable leadership theories out there, she turns her attention to the idea of legacy as a more useful term to consider. The book is somewhat bitty but an easy and enjoyable read. I wish its cover would actually have a picture Tucker mentions in the book – James Ensor’s Christ’s Entry Into Brussels (1888). Ensor’s piece has quite a lot to say both about the topic of leadership and the world around us (which it would seem hasn’t changed much since Ensor’s time). Here it is – hope you will enjoy it as much as I did:

  – Lina

P.S. Tucker has a chapter on humour. Serious teaching on taking ourselves lightly includes the following reminders:

  • Just accept the fact that some days you’re the pigeon, and other days you’re the statue.
  • Don’t always try to be first. Remember, it’s the second mouse that gets the cheese.
