Freedom and Person: Research Colloquium 2015

Thursday, January 22nd, 2015

STA41705Over the past few days at the research colloquium in Amsterdam students have been presenting an update on their studies. Some are at the beginning of their studies seeking a focus and methodology to carry their work forward. Others are facing the challenges of writing and rewriting. All students are part time and doing their work while sustaining ministries in churches and colleges. The geographic range of students is wide. As part of the colloquium we also have various seminars for students and staff. Here Dr Tim Noble is presenting a piece of recent research on ‘Freedom’ drawing some theological links between Russian Orthodox Theology and Liberation Theology. The paper as ever was followed by questions, discussion, and a bit of debate. As the pictures will show Dr Andrew Kirk and Dr Jim Purves were ready to engage engage after thoughtful consideration!

First Promotion at VU of IBTS Centre Student

Wednesday, September 24th, 2014

The 9th of September 2014 saw the first defence and promotion (graduation) at the VU of an IBTS Centre Amsterdam PhD student, Jon Hardin. DSC_0146-001 On this occasion in the Dutch style, Jon publicly defended his PhD thesis: ‘Creating Convictional Community: Missional Spirituality in the Moravian Community of Bethlehem Pennsylvania, 1741-1762’ and was awarded the title of ‘Doctor’.

His supervisor Tim Noble writes:

Jon Hardin, from the USA, first started as a student on our old doctoral programme in Prague in 2006. From the beginning of his studies, he was interested in the Moravian community that was established at Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, in the mid-eighteenth century. Initially he was interested in combining it with reflection on the missional calling of the church in contemporary America, but he was persuaded by his first supervisor, Ian Randall, to concentrate on how the Bethlehem community itself in the period from its foundation until 1760 expressed and deepened its missional spirituality.

There is a lot of material on this community, which is good for a PhD student, but also somewhat daunting, and despite having to deal with a serious illness that made study impossible for several years, Jon kept up at an impressive rate of work. He was able to read and organise the material into a series of chapters looking at the worship, hymnody, community meetings, prayer and art of Bethlehem, and how they spoke to the founding missional vision of the Moravian community.DSC_0097-001

In all this Jon was helped by Ian Randall, and later Tim Noble, as well as by a leading American Moravian scholar, Craig Atwood. In 2013 Jon transferred to the doctoral programme of the VU University in Amsterdam, and from the VU side, Prof. Piet Visser added his expertise, and equally importantly his knowledge of the VU system.

Jon submitted his doctorate in early 2014, and it was read by a group of five readers, all of whom were happy to pass it for defence. So it was that Jon came to be in the Aula of the VU University, where he was able to respond fluently and on the whole convincingly to his five examiners, all of whom pronounced themselves satisfied with his response. This was highly deserved, as Jon had produced a very solid, carefully argued, well-written and convincing study that fully merited the award of the title of doctor of theology.DSC_0119-001

“First Fruits” is the title of a painting by a Moravian artist that Jon used as the basis of his final chapter. In the rather splendid setting of a Dutch doctoral promotion, with its formulae, ceremonials and impressive clothing, Jon has written his own name into the history of both IBTS Centre in Amsterdam and the VU University, as the first fruits of the partnership between the two institutions. We all hope it is the first of a ripe harvest, and we salute Jon for his excellent achievement. (Tim Noble)

What a let down! Obama fails miserably

Friday, December 18th, 2009

So Nobel Laureate Barack Obama went to Copenhagen but he might as well not have bothered. Eye witness accounts from people in the conference hall report his lack lustre speech – the Obama rhetoric under par – offered nothing by way of action and so it looks like the Copenhagen event will produce no useful outcome.

Our son, Tim, an accredited NGO delegate, was in the hall and felt the disappointment. One African delegate sat next to him expressed deep frustration and sadness. Here was the chance for a grandson of Kenya to do something from the richest nation to stand with the poorest, but the opportunity has been lost.

I confess our family owns various Obama inauguration souvenirs and now we are exchanging emails as to how we can ceremonially dispose of them as the corrupt powers attempt to quench our Advent hope.

Impressions of Switzerland and Germany

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009

Some weeks ago a group of students, organized by Dr Peter Penner, had an opportunity to visit Switzerland. Before this trip, I knew about Swiss Reformation only from the books on Christian history and lectures, so this was a good

opportunity to visit those historically important places. Here are some pictures: of Grossmünster church where he served as a pastor; and the statue of Zwingli.

Not far from the Townhall Bridge in Zurich, and under the continuous rain, we hardly manage to find the house No.5, a theatre at the Newmarket between the Predigergasse and the Forschaugasse, where Conrad Grebel who together with Felix Manz founded the Anabaptist Movement lived in this house 1520-1525.
From there, we rushed toward Schleitheim, where a group of Swiss, Austrian and South German representatives of Anabaptists met in the forest, at the edge of the Canton of Schaffhausen. Under the leadership of Michael Sattler, they summarized the insights they had taken from the New Testament. After a twenty minutes walk in the forest, two people out of five reached the top of the summit at Hemmental, where they saw the stone plank of the Anabaptists.taking viagra woman Search Results Generic Online Viagra cheap gerneric viagra

History starts here…

Monday, May 4th, 2009

Yevgeniya, our student (actually our Student President) from Kazakhstan, reflects on the recent trip that the students and some of the staff took to Germany:

History is always connected with cemeteries. Those are special places where a person can feel the time of 17th or 18th century, for example. They are places where time stops!

This academic year has been a special one for us students. We have visited several historic places; but wherever we went, we found ourselves in cemeteries. Grave yards were very specific and unique in each place we went. There were no similar burial grounds. On the one hand they looked the same, but on another hand, each of them had something that  distinguished it from others. The more cemeteries we visited, the more we learned about some people or some specific time period, and our guides chose grave yards as places to tell us about various events and stories – an interesting and unusual way to learn history.
