As many of you know, one of the possibilities IBTS offers is sabbatical stays for pastors, teachers, and anybody else needing refreshment and stimulation. Our most recent friend to make use of the sabbatical programme was Antonio Pires from Portugal. Whilst here, Antonio kept a blog (in Portugese) where he shared his journey with his congregation back at home. But he’s also written something in English for us all to enjoy. In September 2002, during the EBF Council in Oslo, I sat on a bus, and the fellow Baptist beside me was my first personal contact with IBTS-Prague. Like an AK-47 he shot words at a crazy speed about all the virtues of IBTS’ theological programmes. Seven years later during this short sabbatical stay at IBTS, the very same fellow almost convinced me to join the Postgraduate Certificate in Theology progamme in 2010/2011. Not bad, should I say, as one of the results of this first effective experience with the IBTS family in Prague. Can you guess who this fellow is?

But why have I come here, the reader may ask? IBTS represented the finest possibility to do some extra research work toward the writing of my Master degree thesis in Portugal. In fact, it was great to jump from a situation of a more or less 8.000 volumes library to more or less 70.000 volumes library I found here. And at the end of my stay I have no doubt about the quality of resources I found here, and of course a serious care from the staff, professors included.
Finally, in spite of being involved in a kind of individual project, Chapel time and the talks and sharing with other students gave me a chance to be enriched both spiritually and socially. Where else in a Baptist theological institution in Europe will I meet people from countries like Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Belgium, Italy and Myanmar, beside many others, and at the same time a qualified and easily accessible faculty? Honestly I think that only here this is possible.
These are some of the impressions about things which made my stay here more profitable and probably will seriously influence the next stage in my theological studies.
